The milkshake machine squeaked as Kaelyn scrubbed the last one. The bell above the door jingled. 'We brought you cookies,' her sister said, setting two paper bags on the counter.
Kaelyn wiped her chocolate-dusted hands on her apron. She smiled at her mom and sister. 'Thanks,' she said. 'You guys are the best.'
Night air cooled her flushed face as she walked home. A streetlamp buzzed and flickered overhead. Her front door clicked open with a familiar key turn.
Inside, two soft shapes rose from the sofa. Ken the orange cat and Snowball the white cat rubbed against her legs. They purred like tiny engines.
Kaelyn sank onto her bed and pulled the covers up to her chin. The paper bag sat beside her pillow. Ken jumped up and began kneading the blanket.
Snowball wove through her fingers like a silk ribbon. Ken curled into a warm loop against her shoulder. She breathed in the steady rhythm of their purrs.
Her phone lit up on the nightstand. A text from her mom: 'Sleep well, sweetheart.' Kaelyn whispered back, 'Thanks, Mom.'
She turned off the lamp. Moonlight painted silver stripes across the floor. Ken purred louder, and Snowball's tail tapped a steady beat.
Morning came with birdsong and the smell of pancakes. Kaelyn stretched and padded to the kitchen door. Ken and Snowball sat there, meowing for breakfast.
Her mom slid a steaming plate onto the table. She winked at Kaelyn. 'Double shift hero deserves breakfast,' she said. Kaelyn laughed.
Kaelyn laughed and picked up her fork. The pancakes were golden and perfect. She took a big bite and smiled.
The sun rose over the quiet neighborhood. Inside, Kaelyn finished the last bite of pancake. Ken jumped onto the table and she shared a corner with him.
