Kai knelt by the garden fence. He held out a cracker. The sparrow hopped down and pecked once.
Then the sparrow flew to the roof. Kai waved. 'See you tomorrow,' he whispered.
The next morning, Kai carried three crackers to the park. A fat orange cat stretched on the bench.
Kai set one cracker down. The cat sniffed, turned, and walked away. Kai picked it back up.
The next day, Kai brought crackers and a small paper boat filled with water. He set it on the grass.
A duck waddled onto the path and dipped its head into the boat. Water splashed Kai's shoes. The duck paddled off toward the pond.
Rain poured the next afternoon. Kai ran to the park in his yellow raincoat, hood up.
The orange cat sat shivering under the bench, fur plastered flat. Kai peels off his raincoat and drapes it over the cat.
The cat stopped shaking and curled into a warm orange ball under the yellow raincoat.
Kai sat beside the bench. He opened his pocket. Three dry crackers.
He broke one in half and offered it. The cat took the cracker gently from Kai's hand.
Kai grinned and patted the cat's soft head. The cat purred.
