Kai stepped past the resort's painted path and into the deep shade of the jungle. Bright blue butterflies flickered around his shoulders like living confetti. The forest smelled sweet and green — like crushed leaves and rain.
He kicked a small stone and kept walking. The trees grew closer together, their branches weaving overhead. Kai thought — it was so quiet here except for the rustle of leaves. He liked it.
Behind him something began to snap. Crunch. Crunch. Like footsteps on dry twigs. Kai walked faster. He glanced over his shoulder but saw only twisting roots and dark shadows between the trees.
The crunching grew louder. He picked up his pace and ran — bare feet slapping against the damp earth. Roots seemed to reach for his ankles. He could hear his own breath, fast and loud in the green quiet.
A tiny figure made of woven palm fronds dropped from a low branch and landed with a whisper at Kai's feet. It stood upright, tilted its head, and held out a small flower made from a fallen petal.
Kai stared. Then he carefully took the flower. A breeze stirred the frond creature's pointed ears and it bowed. Kai smiled. He thought — it was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for him.
The snapping behind him grew louder and heavier. The forest floor shivered. Something vast was crashing through the undergrowth. Kai's breath caught and without thinking he turned and sprinted.
He burst out of the tree line onto bright white sand. Chest heaving, he stumbled to a stop beneath a swaying coconut palm. He looked back — the dark green wall of trees stood silent and still.
He uncurled his hand. The petal flower was crumpled but still beautiful. Kai smiled and held it close to his chest. The jungle was quiet now. Only the ocean whispered in his ears.
Kai slipped the flower into his pocket and stood up. The resort was just beyond the dunes — laughter and music drifting on the sea breeze. He took one last look at the jungle and walked home, the flower safe inside his pocket.
