Kai stood on the porch, clutching his stiff white shirt. A bright blue butterfly landed on the doorbell button. The metal chimed with a sharp ding, startling him. He tried to smooth the fabric himself.
He took a deep breath, smelling salt air and frangipani. Ready to step forward, Kai walked onto the cobblestone street. Music thumped from open windows, drawing him toward the gathering crowd.
His sneakers squeaked against the warm stones as he spotted his family waving from under a palm tree. He ran faster, the rhythm of the drums pulling his feet into time.
Kai reached the party but froze when an elder offered him a heavy drumstick. His hands felt too small for such a big instrument. The elder tapped the stick playfully, inviting him to join.
Kai hesitated, looking at his mother who nodded encouragingly while holding out a smaller, lighter stick. He grabbed the smaller stick and struck the drum once, then twice.
Sweat beaded on his forehead as he laughed, realizing he was making noise that fit perfectly with everyone else. The crowd cheered, clapping their hands above their heads in a wave of sound.
Kai danced with his family, spinning until the colorful flowers in the trees blurred into streaks of green and red. He held his drumstick high, grinning as the sunset turned the ocean gold around them.
The music swelled, wrapping the group in a shared, joyful energy. Kai looked out at the sparkling water, feeling completely at home in the vibrant coastal town.
