A little rabbit darted across the paved path. Kari spotted a blue ribbon trailing from its paw and called, “Wait!”
Leaves crackled as the rabbit vanished toward the trees. Kari scooped up the ribbon and ran after it.
Hopping footprints crossed the grass. Kari followed them past a crooked bench and under low branches.
A squirrel chattered overhead. Kari lifted the ribbon and asked, “Is this your way home?”
The rabbit paused, then hopped on. Kari tried the path beside the pond, but the rabbit shook its head.
Around the big oak, the rabbit shook its head again. Through the shady woodland edge, it still would not turn back.
Kari stepped on a crunchy twig. Crack! She jumped, and the rabbit bounced straight into a bush with a surprised sneeze.
Kari parted the branches. Beneath the oak, she found a small burrow and the matching blue ribbon tied to a twig.
The rabbit wriggled through the opening, then popped back out. It nudged Kari’s shoe as dry leaves rustled like tiny applause.
Kari waved as the rabbit disappeared safely into the burrow. The blue ribbon fluttered from the oak in the sunny breeze.
