Khloe's bedroom glows amber from the fairy lights strung across her ceiling. When the door bursts open and Kiara tumbles in with a sleeping bag slung over her shoulder, Khloe grabs her hand and pulls her toward the mountain of pillows and blankets. 'The fort's not built yet,' Khloe says, already dragging a chair across the rug.
Khloe and Kiara balance quilt frames on a stack of books, but the left tower wobbles and crashes. A pillow lands squarely on Khloe's head. They stare at the collapsed blanket walls, then at each other, and burst into giggles. Khloe flips the chair upright. 'We need a real anchor,' she declares.
Kiara spots the wooden coat rack in the corner. They hoist it into position, drape the largest quilt over it, and watch as the fort stands tall and tunnel-like, humming with every creak. Khloe crawls inside first, then reaches back to pull Kiara through. Fairy light strings dangle from the ceiling like a starry ceiling.
Khloe flips through three silly games — charades, would-you-rather, and a counting challenge where they have to name things that are blue — until the last one ends in a pile of breathless laughter. She unzips a snack bag and they pass around crackers and gummy stars, crunching loudly in the enclosed fort.
The clock ticks toward midnight, and the fairy lights seem to pulse slower, softer, casting long golden shadows across the blankets. Khloe unzips her sleeping bag and pulls it over both of them. The fort feels like its own little world, sealed away from everything else.
The right side of the fort dips — one of the book stacks has finally given way — and the ceiling quilt slides down to pool around their knees. Khloe doesn't move. She just lies back against a mountain of pillows, Kiara already curled up beside her, and reaches for her friend's hand.
The fairy lights hum their last warm glow. 'Best sleepover ever,' Khloe murmurs, and both of them are already half asleep, side by side. The bedroom is quiet now, except for the soft sound of two friends breathing together inside their blanket fort.
Outside the fort, the fairy lights flicker one final time and go dark. The bedroom sleeps. The fort sleeps. Inside, two best friends dream together under a mountain of blankets, their hands still linked.
