Dusk painted the village in gold and purple. Kiko stepped out of his cottage and froze. Near the forest edge, something moved in the grass — a small bird with a bent wing.

Kiko knelt down. He cupped the bird gently in both hands and wrapped it in his scarf. The last warm light of day seeped into the wool against his fingers.

Each morning, Kiko set the thimble of water on the sill and dropped in a mealworm. He hummed a low tune. The bird tilted its head and watched him with bright eyes.

Days slipped by. The bird hopped along the windowsill. It watched the wild birds flying above the hills.

Kiko opened the window wider each day. But the bird only hopped closer to the edge, never flying away.

On the fifth morning, Kiko flung the window wide and stepped back. The bird stood on the sill. It looked at him.

The bird stretched its wings — once, twice — and fluttered out. It rose above the rooftops and circled the village.

Once. Twice. Three times. The bird circled, then descended.

It landed softly on Kiko's shoulder. Then it hopped forward and pecked his cheek — a gentle tap with its tiny beak.

Kiko smiled. He thought — the bird had learned to fly, and it had come back.

The bird tilted its head again — just like before — and chirped a small song. Kiko hummed along.

Days passed. The window stayed open. The bird came and went, and always came back.
