Kiro pushed open the heavy wooden door. He climbed down the dark stairs into Grandpa's secret basement.
The air smelled like hot metal and oil. Kiro's welding goggles slid down his nose as he looked at the shiny tools.
He picked up a flat piece of tin and tried to bend it. It stayed stiff.
He pulled again. The tin finally crunches into a point.
Kiro used the torch to warm the tin until it glowed orange.
He pressed and folded and shaped it into a little bird.
He held it up to the light. The bird wobbled on the table.
The tin bird starts to rattle. Then it hops.
It spreads its tin wings and flies in a circle around Kiro's head. Kiro jumps back and bumps into a shelf.
The tin bird lands softly on Kiro's shoulder and taps his cheek with its beak.
Kiro laughs and picks up another piece of tin. He has a new idea.
Kiro sets the tin bird on the workbench. It starts to rattle.
