Kito pressed his nose against the cold rock of the den mouth. Outside, wildflowers swayed in the golden light. A blue butterfly drifted past, wings catching every shaft of sunlight. "The den is safer," he told himself. His ears flattened, and he shrank back into the dark.

The butterfly looped back and hovered right in front of Kito's nose. He held still. Then he stood. One hesitant paw stepped over the den threshold. Then another. The butterfly rose, and Kito followed into the bright green world beyond.

Kito pushed through the tall grass and bumped softly against a broad lily pad. A green frog sat there, legs folded, blinking slow. "You look brand-new," the frog croaked cheerfully, flicking its tongue at a drifting leaf. The cub's claws dug into the soft moss beneath his paws.

The frog hopped onto a smooth stone so they were face to face. "Come on," it said. Kito took another step forward. Then another. The frog let out a soft ribbit, and the cub's tail gave a small twitch — he was coming.

Deeper in the forest, the butterfly landed on a low branch. A blue jay with a very loud voice called out: "A bear cub! A walking bush of fur!" Kito ducked behind a pine tree and peered out. The jay tilted its head, wings half-spread.

The blue jay fluttered closer and dropped a shiny acorn cap at Kito's feet. "For you," it declared. Kito crept forward and pressed his nose to the smooth rim. It fit perfectly between two claws. He looked up — the jay had already flown away.

The butterfly zipped toward the bubbling stream and disappeared beyond it. Kito reached the water's edge and stopped. Halfway across, a line of slippery stones waited. His front paw lifted, hovered, and dropped. The water glistened far below.

He breathed in the damp green air and set his paw on the first stone. It wobbled. Kito held perfectly still until the wobbling stopped. The butterfly landed gently on his shoulder — a quiet companion. One stone at a time, he crossed.

Kito reached the far bank with his chest heaving and a huge grin breaking across his face. The meadow ahead burst with golden flowers and the soft sound of wings. Tall grass waved like warm honey in the afternoon light. He had done it.

The frog croaked a greeting from a lily pad near the meadow's edge. The blue jay called from an oak branch overhead, proud and loud. Kito trotted past them both, tail high, into the golden sea of flowers. New sounds, new smells, a whole meadow to explore.

Kito explored. He chased a buzzing bee past clumps of lavender. He tumbled in a patch of soft clover and rolled until he was dizzy. The butterfly returned and circled his head once, twice, then settled on a flower. The meadow was enormous, and it was his.

The frog floated lazily on a leaf. "Same time tomorrow?" it called. The blue jay ruffled its feathers. "Tell the meadow I said hello!" Kito waved a paw and turned toward home. The sun was lower now, painting the sky in stripes of orange and pink.

Kito crossed the stream again, stepping over the same slippery stones with confidence. The butterfly rose and danced ahead of him. Behind, the meadow shimmered in the evening light. Ahead, the dark shape of the den waited — but something had changed.

He reached the den and walked right past the mouth. No shrinking back this time. He dipped his head into the cool dark and curled up with his paws tucked neatly under him. The wildflowers, the stream, the meadow — all of it lived inside now.

Outside, the forest hummed with night sounds. Crickets chirped. Leaves whispered in the breeze. Inside, the little bear cub slept, one ear twitching at a dream of blue wings and golden flowers. Tomorrow, the meadow would wait.

Morning came, golden and bright. The den door stayed open. From somewhere in the tall grass beyond, a blue butterfly drifted toward the light. Inside, the little bear cub stirred, ears perking up — ready for another adventure.
