Lady Lila tugs on her red ladybug suit, painting black dots on each finger before marching out the front door into the sunlit street.
She reaches the park and stands perfectly still, antennae wobbling, waiting to see what she might discover. A child at the edge of the sandbox glances over, surprised by the bright red figure.
The boy in the dino costume steps onto the jungle gym but freezes, arms pinned. Lady Lila climbs the ladder one deliberate step at a time, creaking, then creaking, until she reaches the top.
The boy uncrosses his arms, wobbles up behind her, and whispers, "Are you scared?" She shakes her spotted head.
A girl hesitates at the bottom of the tall slide, fingers gripping the plastic rails. Lady Lila crawls backward down the slide on her belly, red suit squeaking against the metal.
The girl blinks, then laughs — a sharp, surprised sound — and shimmies forward. Three more children are now following Lady Lila, one wearing a crooked cape and another in mismatched shoes.
Lady Lila reaches the swings and pushes herself high, the red suit catching the wind like a sail.
Below, the park fills with children taking turns on the monkey bars and climbing rocks, each of them wearing something brave.
Lady Lila drops down into the grass, breathing hard, and watches the whole playground glow with the kind of joy that starts with one small person who was different.
She tilts her head back and watches them all — the boy crossing the bars, the girl on the slide, the girl with the cape looping around the climbing wall.
The boy in the dino costume gives her a tiny wave from the top of the slide. She waves back, slow and steady.
The playground hums with laughter and scuffing shoes and the clatter of plastic. Lady Lila closes her eyes and smiles, the red suit glowing like a little sunset in the grass.
