Mira and her fairy friend Bea stood on the warm, sunlit sand, each wearing a bright red ladybug costume covered in shiny black spots. The ocean glittered behind them as Mira tugged at her tiny wings. "What if we swapped costumes?" she asked, pointing to the spare red fabric draped over Bea’s back.
Bea’s eyes lit up. They hurried to a folding chair where a second costume rested—a deep purple ladybug outfit speckled with silver. Mira slipped into the purple fabric while Bea pulled on the red one. The stiff purple material brushed against Mira’s wings.
The fabric felt scratchy and too stiff against Mira’s wings. "It tickles," she whispered, trying to flap the purple wings. They fluttered very slowly, as if weighed down by the unfamiliar costume. Bea laughed and gave an eager little hop.
They marched toward the water in each other’s costumes, but everything felt wrong. Bea tripped over the too-long red cape and landed in a heap of red polka dots. Mira tried to pick up a smooth seashell, but her new purple gloves were too bulky, and the shell slipped through her fingers.
The waves lapped gently nearby, as if mocking their clumsy movements. Suddenly, Mira spotted something glittering half-buried in the sand—a perfect starfish, just out of reach. She tried to crawl forward in the stiff purple costume, but the fabric kept catching on the grains.
Bea, lighter and quicker in Mira’s original red outfit, darted forward like a real ladybug. She scooped up the starfish and held it out. "Here!" she breathed. Mira took it and grinned, the ridged surface rough against her purple-gloved palm.
They sat together on a smooth driftwood log as the sun painted the sky gold. Mira carefully untied the purple costume and handed it to Bea. "Your red one moves better," she said. Bea hugged her, and the costumes tumbled into a giggling pile.
The ocean breeze carried the sound of their laughter as they walked home side by side, wearing their own colors. The red and purple costumes lay forgotten on the sand, while the starfish rested safely in Mira’s pocket.
