curious, gentle, cheerful

wonder and discovery in museums

Leo pressed his ear against the glass. A faint whistle drifted from somewhere deep inside the museum display — not a real train, but something older, something waiting.

He followed the sound past an old gramophone with a tarnished horn. The hallway grew darker, the floorboards creaking beneath his shoes, until he reached a small room no one seemed to visit anymore.

In the corner of that room, a cracked music box played all by itself. Its lid was half-open, and the thin brittle melody wandered through the still air like a secret being told for the first time.

The melody led him to a glass case — and inside, on a narrow brass track, sat a tiny wooden train. Beside it rested a conductor's cap, as though its engineer had just stepped away for a moment.

Leo lifted the cap. For a moment, nothing happened. Then the train let out a clear bright whistle — a sound so pure and alive it seemed to fill every corner of the quiet room.

He pressed his forehead against the cool glass. The whistle hummed back — a voice from the old world, whispering something he almost understood. He smiled.

He turned from the case and walked slowly down the corridor, the whistle still echoing somewhere in his head. The museum walls seemed to hum along with him, old objects nodding in their cases as he passed.

At the gift shop counter, he spotted a postcard — the tiny wooden train, exactly as he had seen it, with faded words printed beside it. He tucked it into his pocket like a secret treasure.
