Friendship beyond possessions

Maya stood at Leo's door. She carried a cardboard box that went *clank-whirr* when she set it down.

A shiny silver robot marched right out of the box. Its metallic clicking filled the room.

Leo's eyes went wide. He stepped closer and glanced at his toy chest in the corner.

Leo opened his toy chest and pulled out his old wind-up turtle. He wound the key — but the turtle crawled two steps and tipped onto its back.

Leo tried his wooden train next, but the robot marched right into its path and sent it clattering under the couch.

Leo sat back on his heels and watched the robot march all by itself.

Leo lined up all his toys in a row, but the robot marched right through them. His bear fell over and his blocks scattered everywhere.

Then — *BRRRRT!* The robot shuddered, its winding key spun loose, and it collapsed with a loud clatter. Maya stared at the still robot. 'It stopped,' she said very small.

Leo jumped up and ran to his toolbox. He pulled out his big yellow screwdriver.

He knelt beside the robot and started turning screws. A tiny brass gear rolled free, bounced off the rug — *boing* — and landed right in his palm.

Leo slid the gear back in and tightened the last screw. He handed the robot to Maya. She wound the key — *click-click-click* — and the robot stood up, marched two steps, then stopped at her knee and waved its little arm.

Maya laughed and grabbed Leo's hand. 'Again!' she said. The robot marched. Leo marched beside it.
