Leo stood at the classroom door. His knuckles were white on his backpack strap.
The door swung open with a loud CREAK. Leo jumped.
He took a shaky breath and stepped inside.
Leo sat at his desk and unzipped his backpack. He pulled out a pencil, a notebook, and a ruler, lining them up neatly.
His fingers patted the front pocket and found nothing. His shoulders dropped.
Leo thought: I guess I forgot it. He looked down at his empty hands.
Sam slid into the chair next to him and popped open a glittery pencil case.
Inside, the colored pencils shone in perfect rainbow rows.
'I have an extra set,' Sam says, offering a purple one. Leo's gasp turns into a soft laugh.
Leo and Sam colored side by side, their pencils scratching on paper.
They didn't notice the teacher until everyone was settled.
Leo looked at the bright rainbow on his page and smiled.
