The big school building glowed warm under morning sun.
Inside, the classroom door swung open with a loud boom. Leo froze.
A box of crayons clattered to the floor — one purple crayon rolled right to Leo's shoe.
He picked up the purple crayon and held it out.
The girl grinned and patted the empty chair beside her.
Leo slid into the chair and traced the waxy edge of the purple crayon.
She pushed a fresh sheet of paper toward him and he started to draw.
He drew a big green tree, and she added a bright yellow sun in the corner.
The bell rang. Children rushed toward the door calling, See you tomorrow!
Leo walked out with the girl. He pointed up at a cloud shaped like a kite.
She laughed and tugged his hand. He smiled at the sky.
Together they walked toward the playground, the purple crayon safe in Leo's pocket.
