Leo tiptoed down the hallway. The kitchen door creaked open. He was looking for something sweet.
He opened every cupboard. Clank. Clatter. Then — a bottle caught his eye.
The bottle was cool and smooth. Inside, a dark liquid swirled like soda. Leo's lips parted. Could this be juice?
From the hallway came a soft humming sound. Grandpa was coming! Leo's eyes darted to the door.
Just one sip wouldn't hurt, he thought. His fingers twisted the cap — click!
He took a long swig. Then his eyes went wide. He spit it back into the bottle with a sputter!
Sour! So sour! He wrinkled his nose and grabbed a cloth to wipe his mouth.
The doorway filled with a familiar silhouette. His grandfather saw the empty bottle and let out a booming laugh!
Leo's worry melted away. His grandfather's eyes twinkled with mischief. Leo giggled too.
"Vinegar!" said his grandfather, pointing at the bottle. "Not juice, my boy!"
Leo pointed proudly at the pitcher of apple juice on the counter. He poured himself a tall glass.
He took a slow, satisfied sip. His grandfather ruffled his hair. The kitchen felt warm and perfect.
