phonics and reading adventure

Lethu burst into Khanyisa Learning Hub, where sunlight spilled across shelves of books. A turquoise card marked M bounced along the floor with a tiny “mmm!” sound. The reading-station bell jingled overhead. Lethu grinned and chased the sound across the alphabet rug.

Lethu tapped the picture cards one by one. “/m/ for moon, /s/ for sun, /t/ for tap,” Lethu said aloud. The sounds hopped across the rug like quick little footsteps. Then the letters wobbled together, and Lethu paused at the tricky blend.

Lethu tried again, slower this time. Bright tiles clicked into place: M-A-P. A finger slid beneath each letter. “/m/ /a/ /p/—map!” The word popped onto the board in sparkling chalk marks, and Lethu scooped up more tiles for longer words.

Lethu joined familiar sounds into a sentence: “I can read.” Then a runaway O rolled beneath the bookshelf. Without it, the sentence became “I can red!” Lethu crawled after the giggling-looking tile while pages fluttered in the whirring fan.

Lethu caught the O and carried it back to the board. The sentence changed from “I can red!” to “I can read.” Lethu placed the tile carefully, then pointed to every word. The corrected line waited proudly beneath the bright classroom posters.

At the reading station, Lethu pointed to each word: “I can read a book.” The room grew quiet. Only pages whispered as they turned. Lethu read the full sentence aloud, then lifted both hands while the alphabet poster seemed to sparkle.

Lethu chose a fresh book from the low shelf and opened it without help. The first line waited beneath a painted sun. Lethu traced the words slowly, then read them aloud. Nearby, the once-scattered sounds seemed ready to march.

Lethu carried the book to the cozy reading corner. The sounds that once tumbled apart now marched neatly across the page. Lethu settled among the cushions, turned the first page, and began the next adventure.
