In the bright preschool classroom, morning sun poured through the tall windows. The young girl sat at her desk, stacking worksheets neatly.
She peeled back a stack of regular worksheets. Underneath, a giant ABC sheet was taped to her desk — the letters enormous and bright!
She grabbed her yellow crayon and traced the A. Scratch, scratch! A tiny green alligator peeked out from the curve of the letter.
She traced the B and a blue butterfly fluttered its wings, landing on her finger. Then the C — a calico cat stretched from the letter, purring.
She traced the D and a brown dog wiggled out, wagging its tail so fast it made a breeze. 'Wow!' she giggled.
The E brought an elephant that sprayed water from its trunk — splash! The F made a green frog hop right onto the page. The G? A tall yellow giraffe stretched its neck over the whole sheet.
She traced the H and the heart on top gave a big wink. The young girl gasped and dropped her crayon — it rolled under her chair. The heart did a little flip, then settled back.
She picked up the crayon and traced from I all the way to Z. An iguana, a jackrabbit, a kite, and a lemon — they all came alive!
The young girl lifted her completed worksheet and marched across the room. 'Teacher! Teacher! Look what happened!'
The teacher smiled and read every letter out loud, pointing to each animal and object. She pointed to the alligator, the butterfly, the cat — every one.
'Look at this one!' the teacher said, pointing to the giraffe. 'And this one — what a wonderful frog!'
The teacher traced each letter carefully, naming every creature. 'A for alligator,' she said. 'B for butterfly.' She went all the way to Z.
The young girl stood tall with her crayon behind her ear, her completed ABC sheet held proudly. Every letter had a friend.
She watched her teacher's happy face. The ABC sheet was the best worksheet ever.
