Lila and her family marched across the green grass. They carried a big red blanket and a wicker basket. Lila spotted the perfect spot under a tall oak tree.
The young girl dropped to her knees, patting the ground with both hands. 'This is it,' she thought. Her parents followed close behind, smiling at her enthusiasm.
Mom unrolled the blanket and Dad opened the basket. Out tumbled sandwiches, apples, and cookies. Lila reached for a cookie, but her little brother snatched it first.
'That was mine!' Lila said, crossing her arms. Her little sister giggled and offered Lila half of her apple slice. The conflict melted away instantly.
A sudden gust of wind whooshed through the park. The red blanket started to roll and flutter like a sail. Sandwiches flew into the air!
Lila grabbed one corner, and her dad grabbed another. The siblings tumble over the basket trying to hold it down. It was chaos.
They finally pin the blanket down, breathless and laughing. But then a blue jay swoops low and snatches a strawberry right off the blanket.
Lila chased after it with open arms, but the bird landed on a low branch. It dropped the strawberry right into her palm before flying away.
Lila looked at the strawberry, then at her family sitting around her. She broke it in half and shared it with everyone. They ate together happily.
They ate together as the wind gently rustled the oak leaves above them. The day felt perfect, full of simple joys and shared moments.
