The meadow was wide and green, filled with tall grass and bright wildflowers.
Lily hopped too fast through the tall grass and crashed right into a patch of wildflowers.
A daisy stem snapped with a sharp crack. Lily froze, ears flat against her head.
A butterfly landed near the wilted daisy. Lily kicked a clover leaf over the stem. 'Not me!' she said.
A blue jay landed on a nearby stone and tilted its head.
'Did you break the flower, Lily?' Lily stamped one foot. 'Not me!' Her voice came out too loud. The jay blinked once and flew up into the oak tree.
Lily tried to prop the daisy back up with a stick, but it fell over again. She tried a third time, and the stem crumbled completely.
A tear rolled down her cheek and landed in the grass.
Lily hopped straight to the blue jay and tugged its tail feathers. 'I broke the daisy,' she said, looking at her paws.
The jay whistled — a loud, clear call — and the butterfly returned, circling back through the wildflowers.
