gratitude and God's creation

Every morning, Lily walked to her garden and paused at the wooden gate. She pressed her palm flat against the warm post and whispered, "Thank you for the sun, the birds, the flowers." A bluebird hopped onto the fence post and tilted its head, as if listening.

She wandered through the tall meadow grass toward the rolling hills, collecting smooth pebbles and clover sprigs in her pockets. The grass tickled her ankles. The sky was so blue it almost hummed.

Lily stopped dead. A tiny sparrow was tangled in the split paling of the old fence, its little wing fluttering frantically against the rough wood. A sharp sob caught in her throat. She dropped to her knees, fingers working the snagged feather with gentle urgency.

With a final tug, the snag released. The sparrow popped free and hopped once, twice into her open palm, warm and trembling against her skin. Then it darted upward in a dizzy spiral of brown feathers and bright eyes.

The sparrow hovered for one breathless moment, wings catching the light, then spiraled down and landed on her shoulder. It tucked its beak into her hair and stayed there, as steady as a feathered button.

Lily laughed — a bright, breathless sound that chased the butterflies from the clover. She walked on with the sparrow riding her shoulder like a feathery hat, and the bird did not move.

Turning down the path home, she pressed her hand to the mended fence post as she passed. The wood was smooth now where her fingers had worked it free. "Thank you," she said to the sky.

The warm golden light wrapped around her shoulders all the way home, and the sparrow tucked its beak deeper into her hair. Somewhere behind her, a bluebird sang from the garden gate.
