Lily knelt beside the giant oak’s roots. Beneath wildflowers, something tiny peeked out. “What’s that?”
Lily brushed the leaves aside. Whoosh! Wind scattered them across the path, and she followed their rustling trail.
The leaves stopped beside a mossy stone. Lily reached down and lifted the hidden object gently.
It was a tiny wooden birdhouse! Lily turned it over and tapped once. Plop! An acorn dropped into her hand. “Oh!”
Lily carried the birdhouse to a low oak branch. She reached up and set it on the smooth bark.
Slip! The birdhouse slid down the smooth branch. Bump! Lily caught it before it touched the ground.
Lily studied the oak’s branches. Then she chose a lower one, thick and sturdy, where the birdhouse could rest.
Lily placed the birdhouse on the sturdy branch. It stayed. Around it, butterflies fluttered like bright paper bits.
