Chedza stepped onto the dirt path. A crinkly wrapper flew up from the grass and stuck to her shoe. She frowned, then peeled it off with a satisfied pop.
Chedza looked down, peeled the wrapper off, and tossed it into the blue bin. The bin clattered, and a tiny green worm popped out.
Chedza walked to the garden. A crumpled juice box lay beside a wilting flower. She crouched down to inspect it.
Chedza picked up the box, but it was heavy and leaked sticky syrup. Wiping the syrup with a leaf, Chedza buried the box in the compost pile.
Near the wooden fence, Chedza spotted a tangled ball of string and a lost plastic spoon. She picked up the string and tugged.
Chedza tried to untangle the string, but it got tighter. Chedza cut the string with scissors and stacked the spoon with other recyclables.
Chedza reached the far corner of the yard. A mountain of leaves hid a shiny tin can half-buried in the dirt. She approached slowly.
Chedza pushed the leaves aside, and a family of beetles scuttled out. Freezing for a moment, Chedza scooped the beetles into a small pot and set it under a bush.
Chedza looked at the tidy yard. The blue bin was full, the compost pile neat, and the path clear. She smiled.
Chedza picked up a small broom and swept a final dusting of leaves into a neat pile. The sun felt warm on Chedza's back as they hummed a happy tune.
