Lola trotted across the sunny green grass. A sharp, panicked "mew!" dropped from the sky. She tilted her ears forward and spotted a tiny, trembling kitten clinging to the highest branch of the giant oak tree.
She leaped against the rough trunk. "Ruff!" she barked. She wanted to show the furry climber how to shimmy backward. Her claws scratched the dry bark, but the frightened kitten only squeezed its eyes shut.
A strong gust of wind shook the heavy branches. The tiny paws slipped, dangling wildly over the empty air. Lola needed a plan fast. She paced in a quick circle, sniffing the damp summer grass into a blurry green line.
There it was! A giant, puffy yellow cushion sat on a nearby patio chair. She clamped her teeth onto the thick canvas, pulling hard. Bump, bump, bump. She dragged the heavy square directly under the swaying oak branch.
Crack! The thin wood snapped. The little kitten tumbled out of the high leaves. Lola shoved the cushion one last inch with her wet nose. The falling furball landed right in the center with a giant, fluffy POOF!
The kitten shook a loose leaf from its ear and hopped down. It stretched forward and gently bumped its head against her chin. Lola gave a wide, rapid tail wag, listening to the loud purr filling the bright backyard.
