The garden woke up in strips of gold. Bluebells nodded along the wooden fence, and daisies blinked open their yellow eyes. Buttercups spread their shiny cups to catch the light.
Lottie flipped onto her back and spread her bright red wings. She did a proud loop-the-loop right over the bluebell. 'Look at my spots!' she chirped.
She dove toward a cluster of daisies and circled their yellow centers, wings flashing. 'My spots!' she called. The daisies nodded slowly, but they didn't flutter back.
Lottie tapped her little black feet on a petal. Tap, tap, tap. Nobody looked up.
Lottie landed on a broad green leaf and folded her wings close. Bees buzzed and leaves rustled all around her. She thought nobody was looking at all.
A painted butterfly drifted past and settled beside her. It folded its orange wings open, then closed, then open again. 'My wings,' it said.
Lottie's antennae perked up. She burst into a spinning circle, wings wide. 'Look at my spots!' she shouted, and the butterfly matched her beat for beat.
Their wings flashed red and orange as they spun. The butterfly kept perfect time.
They zigzagged over the flower beds, wings glittering. Red and orange dotted the green garden below.
Lottie rested on a petal, her spots gleaming. A bumblebee buzzed past.
