Lucille stepped over the weathered garden fence, her sneakers pressing into the damp moss. Kit trotted behind, his white fur brushing against the ferns. Something in her pocket began to hum — the magical pen, pulsing with a soft blue light.
The blue light spilled from her pocket and painted the trees in liquid silver. Lucille stopped. Behind her, the forest path she had come from was gone — tangled roots had woven themselves into a solid wall of wood and vine.
They followed the glowing silver line through the trees until a babbling brook blocked their way. Kit approached the water's edge, crouched low, and leapt — but his paws slipped on the wet stones and he landed with a loud splash.
Lucille tapped the pen against her chin. She bent down and drew a quick arch over the water. The ink lifted off the page and hovered in the air, solidifying into a slender bridge of shimmering silver light.
They crossed the bridge and pressed deeper into the woods. The trees grew thick and the shadows lengthened, shifting and whispering as if something watched from between the trunks.
Kit pressed himself against Lucille's legs, his tail puffed out like a bottlebrush. She bit her lip, then rubbed the barrel of the pen and sketched a circle around them. Warm golden light pushed the shadows back.
Where the shadows had fled, a trail of glowing mushrooms appeared — each one pulsing soft blue and gold, beating in rhythm with the pen's light like a quiet heartbeat.
The pen's glow began to flicker — once, twice — and then it went dark. The mushrooms dimmed. Kit let out a sharp yowl and circled Lucille's ankles, his fur bristling in the sudden near darkness.
Lucille closed her eyes. She listened to the distant brook and the rustle of leaves overhead. When she opened them, she stepped forward without the pen. 'I know the way,' she murmured.
The pen flared to life — brighter than ever before — and a clear path of silver light unfolded ahead, leading straight back through the trees toward the backyard fence.
They followed the silver path through the trees and stepped through the familiar garden gate. Suburban twilight wrapped around them like a soft blanket, and the magical forest fell silent behind them.
Kit leaped onto the patio stones and purred, rubbing against Lucille's legs. She smiled, ran her hand over his soft white fur, and pocketed the now-dormant pen. The adventure was over — but it had been perfect.
