The sunny garden stretched wide and green. Lula wanted someone to see her spots.
Lula flapped her red-and-black spotted wings and landed with a soft tap on a big green leaf. She rubbed her antennae and hopped three times — one, two, three.
A yellow butterfly drifted past, its wings dusted with bright pollen. 'Your spots are pretty,' it said, then zipped off toward a patch of sunflowers.
Lula watched it go, her little legs still, and let out a small 'oh.'
Lula marched to a bush and found a single blue flower peeking through the leaves. She tapped one spot against the blue petal. 'Blue,' she said to nobody.
She kept walking, her six legs clicking on a twig, until she hopped onto a smooth purple stone near a puddle and peered down.
Her reflection showed red and black and — surprise — a tiny smear of blue from the flower stuck to her wing. She blinked. She looked again. The blue was real.
Lula fluttered up to a tall yellow flower and pressed her wing against its petals, then pulled away.
Her red spots now carried yellow, blue, and purple dust. She held them up like a painted fan and did a happy wiggle.
The wiggle made her spots blink in the sun. Lula smiled. She had colors all over her wings now.
Lula fluttered from flower to flower, picking up every color she could find. Her spots became a painted fan of red, yellow, blue, and purple.
Now everyone in the garden could see her wonderful spots. They sparkled in the sun like little painted jewels.
