helpful, curious, cheerful

teamwork and friendship

Polo followed a winding path through tall grass, pushing aside hanging vines to reveal an overgrown barn with chipped blue paint and a crooked door. His nose twitched at the scent of damp wood and sweet wildflowers. A faded sign half-buried in weeds read 'LULUBEARS.' His tail wiggled with excitement, and he trotted inside.

Inside, old swings creaked gently in the wind. Polo's paws clicked on dusty floorboards as he padded deeper into the shadowy space. He sniffed at cobwebs and forgotten tools, his ears perked with curiosity. This place was lost, but it still had magic waiting inside.

Polo dragged a rusted shovel from a corner and marched out to clear the overgrown play areas. He pulled up thick weeds and stacked brush into a growing pile. 'Hey! Help me!' he barked at a squirrel, a rabbit, and two ducklings — but they scattered or shook their heads and refused.

Polo's ears drooped as he dropped the shovel with a clatter. He sat heavily beside the unraked pile. The afternoon sun was warm, but he felt all alone. Nothing would ever be fun again — not here, not without help.

Polo turned to drag another heavy branch when his paw caught on something hidden under the brush. A stack of colorful fabric banners lay tucked inside a water-stained cardboard box. He opened it carefully and found bright red, yellow, and turquoise flags folded neatly inside.

Among the flags, Polo found a note in crayon: 'For the happy place.' His eyes went wide. His tail started a slow, hopeful thump against the ground. He lifted a red banner toward the sky, and the wind caught it like a flag, rippling and bright.

Polo tied the banners to low branches and fence posts around the barn yard. Then he positioned himself at the entrance and barked loudly and repeatedly for anyone to come see what he had found.

A scruffy terrier, a sleepy bulldog, and an energetic collie trotted up from behind the shed. They paused at the sight of Polo surrounded by fluttering fabric. The terrier sniffed a banner and sneezed. The bulldog yawned and stretched toward the clearing. Polo's whole body wiggled with relief.

The crew worked side by side — the collie dug out flower beds, the bulldog hauled away debris, and the terrier chased off weeds. Polo directed everyone with enthusiastic barks and careful nudges. Paint splatters flew as they covered the old barn walls in bright stripes.

By sunset, the space was transformed into a colorful playground with swinging ropes, a sandpit, and climbing logs — all wrapped in fluttering banners. Polo stood at the entrance of Lulubears Haven, proud and bright, watching everything take shape.

The terrier curled up at Polo's side. The bulldog snored softly nearby. The collie waved at a group of arriving animals with her tail. Everything was exactly as the crayon note had promised — a happy place, built together.

Polo looked at his friends, then at the haven they had made. He thought about the faded sign outside — Lulubears, at last — and his tail gave one big, happy wag. The happy place was open for everyone.
