Lumi tugged his blanket over his head and pressed himself into the pillow. His eyes stayed squeezed shut when the bedroom light clicked off. The teddy bear sat on the edge of the bed, still and quiet.
Lumi peeked one eye open. A tall shadow leaned on his wall — a dragon with spiky wings. He tapped the wall and the dragon's head bobbed. The teddy bear, propped against the nightstand, had made the shape.
Lumi crept to the window and pushed the curtain aside. Moonlight flooded the room and painted the floor in silver. The teddy bear glowed softly, and his own shadow stretched long and thin across the tiles.
Lumi tiptoed into the garden and crouched near the mossy stones. The tropical leaves above him rustled and shifted. Shadows danced — a swaying snake, a flapping bird.
A round shadow blob wobbled when Lumi wiggled. He laughed out loud. The teddy bear stayed tucked under his arm as the shadow shapes danced all around him.
Lumi ran back inside with the teddy bear warm against his chest. His shadow on the wall looked like a hero holding a treasure. He felt proud.
Lumi curled up in bed. The teddy bear rested on his chest, glowing faintly in the dark. The shapes outside his window were friendly now. He made them himself.
Lumi closed his eyes. The dark was full of friendly shapes he had made. He smiled and drifted off to sleep.
The teddy bear sat still and quiet. The dragon shadow rested on the wall. The garden shadows slept among the leaves. Everything was calm.
Lumi dreamed of friendly shadows. The teddy bear kept watch. And the night stayed soft and bright.
