learning to give and receive love

The forest village glowed gold in the morning sun. Mossy logs lined the path. A little fox cub scampered past the thatched cottages.

Lumi found an old rabbit sitting on a mossy log. She sat beside him and asked, "What is love?"

The rabbit tapped his nose against a daisy. Its petals felt soft as wool. "Love," he said, "is a small thing."

Lumi's tail drooped. She didn't understand. A small thing? That couldn't be right.

The rabbit pointed to a mouse near the stone bridge. The mouse shared berries with her friend. Then he showed a cricket by the cottage. It chirped a tired song, and the rabbit listened very still.

Then rain began to fall over the thatched roofs. The rabbit tucked himself under a broad leaf and stayed dry. "These are small things," he said. "But they matter."

Lumi tried too. She offered clover to a passing mouse. She pressed her ear to the damp earth to hear the crickets. She hid under a leaf in the rain. But nothing changed inside her.

She thought: maybe love is too big for small things. She wandered to the flower meadow and gathered petals — yellow, purple, and white.

She wove them into a crooked crown and ran home. Her mother was sitting by the fire. Lumi placed the crown on her head.

Suddenly, the petals glowed with a soft golden light. The mother fox's eyes widened, then softened. She pulled Lumi into a tight hug.

Lumi understood. Love wasn't just something small. It was something she could give.

Every day, Lumi visited the old rabbit. She shared acorns. She listened to frogs. She stayed dry under leaves. And her tail wagged every time her mother smiled.
