Lumi walked through the park. Something moved in the bushes.
She heard a tiny cheep. Her eyes widened. She reached toward the bushes.
A small bird sat on the ground. Lumi picked up a broad leaf. She held it under the bird.
A breeze shook the branches. Golden leaves fell all around. The bird stayed steady.
She carried the bird to the porch. The leaf tilted. The bird fell into dandelions.
She cupped her hands around the fluff. A tiny heartbeat pressed against her palms. The bird chirped loud and clear.
Inside, she placed the bird in a small box. Soft towels lined the bottom. The bird tucked its head and closed its eyes.
She smiled. "You're safe now," she whispered.
