Luna raced into the colorful village square beneath a wide, star-filled sky. A bright star tumbled downward and landed beside the dry fountain. “Wait!” Luna called, scooping it up before it rolled beneath a painted cart. The star sneezed golden sparks, then pointed a narrow beam toward the dark hillside.
Luna carried the magic star through winding lanes lined with blue shutters and flower pots. At every wrong turn, its glow shrank to a sleepy glimmer. Beside a clattering wind chime, Luna stopped and whispered, “Don’t worry. I’ll help.” The star blinked once against her palms.
The lane opened onto the hillside, and Luna began to climb. A sudden gust snatched the star away. It skittered past silver stones, flashed beneath the grass, and vanished inside an upside-down watering can. “Boing!” it cried, popping free. A glowing trail sprang across the hill.
Luna followed the glowing trail to the village’s darkened lantern tower. The magic star fit perfectly into a small empty socket beside the door. Luna stretched on tiptoe, reaching upward. Before she could place it, the tower door slammed shut, and the star flickered down to one lonely spark.
Luna wedged the striped wooden stool beneath the stubborn door. Then she climbed the tower steps, one careful step at a time, carrying the flickering star. Above her, the lantern chamber waited in darkness. Wind rattled the walls, but Luna kept climbing.
At the top, Luna pressed the magic star into the empty socket. Light burst through the tower like a golden waterfall. Every village lantern blinked awake, one after another, until the square shimmered below. Luna laughed as the star zipped skyward, leaving one tiny sparkle on her sleeve.
Luna returned to the square beneath the shining night sky. She hung the sparkling sleeve beside the dry fountain, where its tiny light danced on the stones. Above the rooftops, the rescued star twinkled three times. Luna watched quietly as the village lanterns glowed around her.
Afterward, each evening began with a glow. The village lanterns shone along every lane, and the fountain stones glittered softly. Luna looked up, waiting. High above, one star twinkled three times—blink, blink, blink—like a cheerful thank-you.
