Luna skipped down the sidewalk on a bright morning.
She stopped dead. A cardboard box sat on the curb, and a tiny blue bike leaned against it. A boy stood behind it, gripping one end, his fingers white around the handle.
Luna's squeaky red shoes tapped-fast forward. She planted her feet, raised her right arm straight up, and bellowed, 'Oi!'
A cardinal landed on the box and tilted its head like it heard something too.
The boy blinked, dropped his side of the box, and stared at her shoes.
Luna bowed politely toward the bike, then toward the box, then toward the cardinal, which finally flapped away with a loud wush.
The boy snorted, which turned into a giggle, which turned into a full belly laugh that made him slide down the side of the box.
Luna giggled too and gave the cardboard a gentle boop.
The boy pushed the box upright and tapped the blue bike with his toe.
'I'm Leo,' he said. Luna grinned and held up a finger, then reached behind the box and pulled out a second helmet. 'For you,' she said.
Leo looked at the helmet, then at Luna, and nodded very seriously.
They sat on the curb together, each holding a helmet, both bikes ready for a ride.
