Luna stepped outside in her yellow hat and golden boots. A tiny green bud popped open. A butterfly fluttered down and landed right on her nose.
She giggled and followed it into the garden. The butterfly danced between rows of marigolds and foxgloves.
At the flower patch, a bumblebee buzzed around bright orange petals. Luna crouched low. "Hello there," she whispered.
A frog splashed into the pond. Luna stomped her golden boots in the warm mud. Splash! She laughed out loud.
In the backyard, a pile of brown leaves crackled under her boots. Crunch, crunch. An acorn dropped at her feet.
She reached for the acorn — but a squirrel snatched it and zoomed up the tree. "Hey!" Luna called.
Winter arrived. The garden wore a blanket of white snow. Luna marched through it, her golden boots leaving print after print.
She cupped her hands and waited. A snowflake settled on her palm — then melted away. "So cold!"
Luna touched the rough bark of a bare tree. Above her, a tiny bluejay perched on a branch and tilted its head.
She looked up, eyes wide. The bluejay let out a sharp chirp and fluttered away. Luna smiled at the empty branch.
On the walk home, mud dried on her boots and a speck of snow still clung to her cheek. The garden was quiet.
Inside, she set her yellow hat on the table. Then she looked out the window at the sleeping garden and rested her chin on her hands.
