Eleven forty-seven p.m. The apartment building hums quietly against the night sky. One window on the second floor glows yellow—Mai's room, where a desk lamp buzzes like a tired bee.

Mai sits at her desk surrounded by a mountain of notes. Pencils roll everywhere. She rubs her eyes and whispers to the empty room, 'How am I supposed to remember all of this?'

The bedroom door clicks open. Her mother stands in the doorway holding two steaming mugs. 'I brought you chamomile,' she says softly, setting one down beside the pencil chaos.

Her mother sits on the edge of the bed and places a warm hand on Mai's shoulder. 'You work so hard,' she says, 'but I'm proud of you no matter what grade comes back.'

Mai looks at the warm mug, then at her mother's tired smile. She takes a slow breath, and something inside her softens. 'Okay,' she whispers.

Mai finishes her tea, closes the thickest book, and carries it to the shelf. She reaches up, turns off the buzzing lamp, and the room goes dark except for the streetlight glow.

Tomorrow, she'll try again. Not because she has to. But because she gets to.

The bedroom is quiet. The closed textbook rests on the shelf. The streetlight paints a long golden rectangle across the floor, and the girl sleeps beneath her blanket.

The next morning, Mai walks across the green campus with her backpack bouncing against her shoulders. The air is crisp and bright.

She stops at the edge of the quad and looks back at her apartment building. Through the morning air, she can see her mother's kitchen light still glowing in the window.

Mai smiles. She adjusts her strap, turns, and starts walking again across the green quad toward the day ahead.

The campus wakes up around her—birds in the trees, the distant sound of a bicycle bell, the rustle of pages turning in the library. Mai keeps walking, and she is ready.
