Marcos sprinted toward the goalpost. His sneakers kicked up a cloud of dust that tasted like dry earth and summer heat. He wound up for the winning shot.
The ball hit the crossbar with a sharp CLANG. It bounced high into the blue sky, getting stuck in the low branches of an old oak tree. Marcos froze, staring at the trapped sphere.
He climbed the rough bark, scratching his knee on a jagged knot. The ball refused to budge no matter how hard he pulled. A sudden gust of wind swirled the leaves around him.
As he reached out again, the branch unexpectedly swayed downward. It dropped the ball directly into his waiting hands with a soft THUMP. He held it tight, surprised by the sudden luck.
His friends cheered from below, their voices rising above the rustling canopy. Marcos laughed, wiping sweat from his forehead. He tossed the ball back to the team with a wide grin.
They reset for another round, the game continuing under the warm sun. Friendship mattered more than any single score. The afternoon light glowed softly on the field.
