cheerful, curious, helpful

friendship and joy in simple moments

Marko sat alone under the nipa hut, tracing the cracks in the wooden floor. Somewhere beyond the rice fields, his friends were laughing.

He stood and walked toward the laughter. At the field's edge, a red chalk line marked a patintero court on the dry dirt.

He mimed a quick step across the line — then his foot slipped into a shallow hole. Mud squelched inside his shoe.

Behind a bundle of dried corn husks, he found them — three colored hats, yellow, blue, and red, waiting.

He tried on the yellow hat, then the blue, then the red — stacking them into a wobbly tower on his head.

He ran toward the old banyan tree and found his friends — tangled in a fishing net, wearing mismatched hats, frozen mid-giggle.

One friend reached for him, but the net snagged tight. A papaya fell from a low branch and landed at Marko's feet.

Marko picked up the papaya and offered it to his friend. The friend took a big bite and made the yummiest sound.

Laughter erupted from the net. With some tugging and wriggling, they all broke free and started chasing each other along the chalk line.

Marko ran with them, the red chalk dust staining his shoes, mixing with the sound of laughter rising into the golden air.

Somewhere beyond the rice fields, his friends were laughing.

They ran until the sky turned pink, and the only sound left was the wind in the rice.
