Marmalade hopped onto the windowsill. The moon hung low and impossibly close, glowing like a giant cheese slice. She pressed her nose to the cool glass.
A fat cloud drifted right across the moon and blocked it completely. Thump, thump — Marmalade batted at the window with one paw. Then she stood on her hind legs and pushed her whole fluffy body against the glass.
The cloud wouldn't budge. Marmalade sat back down with her paws tucked neatly under her chest. A tiny disappointed sound escaped her — 'mrrp?' — and she flicked her tail once, twice.
Suddenly the cloud drifted sideways and the moon burst back into view — but now it was reflected in a puddle of rainwater on the windowsill. Two moons!
She dipped one paw into the puddle and ripples danced across both moons, turning them into giggling silver streaks.
Marmalade tucked her paws beneath her again. One eye half-closed, she purred like a tiny engine.
The moonlight spilled across the sill in a warm silver path. Marmalade rested her chin on her paws and watched the clouds drift by.
One cloud passed right in front of the moon again. Marmalade didn't push against the glass this time. She just waited.
And then — whoosh — the cloud drifted right on by. The moon blazed back down, brighter than before, as if it had been holding its breath.
Marmalade closed both eyes and purred a little longer. The moon kept shining. Everything was exactly as it should be.
