The school was quiet. Matt walked inside in his socks, rubbing his sleepy eyes. His little foot bumped against something hard beneath the teacher's desk. A colorful wooden box sat tucked in the shadows.
He knelt beside the desk and picked it up. The box turned over in his hands, and the carved swirls of red, yellow, and blue caught the bright morning light coming through the open window. It looked magical.
His fingers found a tiny brass keyhole and pushed at the side panels. They did not move. A clock on the wall clicked loudly. He set the box on his desk and frowned, tapping a wooden tile.
He pressed harder. He slid the panels again. He twisted and tugged with all his might. The box would not open. He took a deep breath and tried once more.
Then — click! The lid sprang open and a dozen tiny paper birds burst into the air. They whirred and danced through the sunbeams like living origami, their paper wings catching every ray of light.
The paper birds fluttered around his head, brushing his hair with their papery wings. Some landed softly on the windowsill while others kept dancing, circling higher and higher toward the open window.
One by one they spilled out into the warm morning air, drifting toward the schoolyard. Matt giggled and followed them to the doorway, his arms outstretched as if trying to catch the last ones still circling above him.
At the edge of the path, the first classmate was already running up the driveway, backpack bouncing. Matt held up the smallest paper bird and gave a big wave. The boy waved back, breathless and grinning.
The school bell rang out across the yard. More and more children poured through the gates, their voices filling the warm morning air. Matt slipped the tiny paper bird into his pocket and ran to meet them.
Inside the classroom, the carved box rested quietly on the teacher's desk. The morning light had shifted, painting the swirling red, yellow, and blue patterns in deep warm gold. Everything was still.
Somewhere in the schoolyard, Matt laughed. The sound floated back through the open window and danced among the empty desks. The little paper birds were gone, but the magic stayed behind in the quiet room.
The box waited quietly. Its secret swirls gleamed in the warm light, patient and still. Whoever came next would find it, and the paper birds would dance again.
