Maya padded into the bright kitchen. Sizzle! Pop! She stopped, her eyes wide as a sharp whistle pierced the air. She pointed a sticky finger at the hot dosa pan, then at the steaming teapot.
"Breakfast time!" Dad said, sliding a shiny steel plate onto her highchair tray. He handed her a giant, golden piece of crispy dosa. Maya kicked her bare toes against the chair legs and took a loud, crunchy bite.
Mom set down a plate of buttery scones and poured milky tea into a tiny porcelain cup. Maya looked at her flaky dosa, then at the hot tea. She grabbed her silver spoon and tapped the saucer with a ringing clink, clink.
With a sudden swoop, Maya grabbed her huge slice of folded dosa. She aimed straight for her little teacup and dunked the crispy edge right into the hot tea. The thin crepe soaked up the milky liquid, turning into a heavy, dripping scoop.
She shoved the soggy, dripping scoop straight into her mouth. Mom and Dad froze in surprise, holding their breath. Maya chewed happily and gave a wide, messy grin. She clapped her hands together with a wet smack, splattering tea drops everywhere.
Dad burst into laughter and tore off a piece of his own dosa to dunk in his mug. Mom chuckled, sliding the scones to the center of the table for sharing. Maya hummed a bouncy tune, settling perfectly into a kitchen that smelled like toasted lentils and sweet tea.
