Among Grandma’s marigolds, Mia dug carefully through the dark soil. Her fingers uncovered a seed no bigger than a crumb. Bees hummed above the orange blossoms while she rolled the tiny treasure between her fingers. “What will you become?” she whispered.
Mia carried the seed to a sunny patch beside the marigolds. She pressed it into the earth, tucked loose soil over the little hollow, and poured water from her bright blue can. Splashes spotted her shoes. She wiped them on the grass and set a small twig beside the spot.
The next morning, Mia hurried outside and scraped away a little soil. Nothing appeared except the twig and a beetle wearing a shining drop of water like a helmet. Mia sighed, smoothed the soil back into place, and gave the hidden seed one careful drink. Then she left the earth undisturbed.
For several days, Mia checked the garden, watered the soil, and waited. Sun passed overhead. Wind fluttered the marigolds. One noisy afternoon, rain drummed on every leaf. Still, she returned each morning, keeping her hands away from the sleeping seed.
Then—pop! A green shoot poked through the soil. It lifted the twig into the air like a tiny flag. Mia clapped both hands and shouted, “You did it!” The new stem trembled in the breeze, but it stayed upright beneath the brightening sky.
After that, Mia returned every morning. The shoot grew taller and unfolded two fresh leaves, then four. She watched sunlight slide across their green surfaces and whispered, “Keep going.” Nearby, the bright blue can waited beside the garden bed.
One morning, Mia touched a leaf with just one fingertip. It held steady beneath the golden sun. She placed the watering can nearby, then settled beside the healthy green plant. Bees murmured over the marigolds. Mia watched the leaves tilt toward tomorrow.
The garden grew quiet around them. Leaves rustled. A bee buzzed past. Mia leaned closer, watching the plant make its small, steady changes in the evening light. Tomorrow, she thought, there might be another leaf.
