Mia sat on the swing, pushing off with scuffed sneakers. Across the field, three kids kicked a soccer ball — pass, dribble, shot! A tiny meow sliced through the afternoon air. Beneath the park bench, no bigger than her shoe, a calico kitten crouched, one ear tipped like a torn leaf, staring up with enormous green eyes.

Mia slipped off the swing and crept toward the bench. The kitten's eyes widened. It bolted — a flash of orange and white — zipping between the legs of a picnic table. Mia reached out, but the kitten vanished behind the playground slide with a rustle of dry leaves.

Mia sat on the bench and pulled a granola bar from her pocket. She peeled it open with careful fingers. Below, the kitten's nose twitched. Mia broke off a piece and set it on the wood. Then another. The kitten crept forward, sniffed, and ate.

Mia inched closer. Her fingers brushed the kitten's soft calico fur. The kitten didn't run. Then — bark! A dog down the path. The kitten scrambled up the nearest tree, claws clicking against bark, and perched on a low branch, trembling.

Mia looked up. The kitten clung to a branch three feet above the ground, green eyes wide. She looked at the sky — purple bleeding at the edges. She set her backpack down and gripped the oak tree. Bark bit into her palms as she pulled herself up, one hand, then the other.

Halfway up, the branch shook. The kitten's claws dug into Mia's sleeve. 'I've got you,' she whispered. The kitten pressed itself against her chest, a warm little weight, as Mia carefully climbed back down.

Mia walked home with the kitten tucked inside her open jacket. Its calico tail peeked out the top. The park gates passed behind her. Her sneakers were scuffed, her fingers scratched, but she didn't notice.

A car door slammed down the street. 'Miso! There you are!' A boy sprinted toward her, arms open. The kitten wriggled free from the jacket and dashed toward him, rubbing against his ankle.

The boy scooped up the kitten and hugged it tight. 'You found him!' he said. Mia waved. Her sneakers were scuffed. Her fingers were scratched. She felt something unfamiliar — like she belonged somewhere.

That evening, Mia sat on the swing again. The soccer game had moved to the far side of the field. The three kids weren't looking at her. She pushed off with her scuffed sneakers and swung higher, the wind in her face.

On the next swing, Mia swung so high she could see over the fence. Past the park, past the sidewalk, to the street where the boy walked home with a calico kitten tucked under his arm. She smiled.

The next afternoon, Mia didn't sit on the swing. She walked to the edge of the field. 'Want to play?' she asked. The kids looked at her. One kicked the ball toward her. Mia ran.
