Mia tumbles through a gap in the trees and lands on soft moss. She blinks up at the valley full of dinosaurs.
The big green one yawns right next to her. Fern leaves drip onto her face. "Wow," she whispers.
BOOM — ash puffs from the volcano. Three boulders crash into the river. The water goes still.
Mia shoves the biggest boulder. Her boots slide on the wet rock. Thud. Nothing moves.
A small dinosaur waddles over and bumps its nose against the stone. Thump, thump. It slides backward. The ferns begin to droop.
Dig, dig, dig. Muddy water splashes everywhere. The big green dinosaur's tail sweeps wide and knocks the trench open with a whump. Everyone stumbles.
Mia claps. "Everyone push!" They lean in together, and the baby dinosaur sneezes onto the boulder: ACHOO! It tumbles off, and the river bursts through in white water.
The water roars past the ferns, which snap upright. Mia sits on the mossy bank, hair plastered to her forehead, and laughs. A baby dinosaur rests its chin on her knee.
