The sun peeked through the window. Mia stuffed her backpack with crayons, books, and a sandwich.
She tugged the zipper. It would not close. She sat on the backpack. Still stuck.
Mia marched to the kitchen. The air smelled like warm toast. She turned to her mom.
'Mom, what happens on the first day?' The mother smiled and counted on her fingers.
'You paint rainbows. You build towers. You make new friends.' Mia's eyes grew wide. She dropped her shoe. Oops.
Mia ran back to her room. She pulled out her biggest crayon — the orange one — and held it like a magic wand.
'I can paint rainbows!' she shouted. She turned back to the kitchen, crayon in hand.
She went back to her backpack. This time the zipper glided shut with a happy click.
Mia lifted the backpack onto her shoulders. It fit just right. She walked to the door.
The mother appeared in the hallway behind her. 'You ready?' she asked softly.
'Ready,' Mia said. She took a deep breath and opened the door.
Tomorrow is going to be amazing.
