CLANG! The bright orange ball ricocheted off the metal crossbar. It bounced wildly across the green grass, coming to rest near Leo’s sneakers. Mila stomped her cleat, sending blades of grass trembling under her weight. She marched forward, jaw set tight, ready for another try.
Mila dribbled past two imaginary defenders, weaving through the twisty slides and tunnels. A sharp whistle pierced the air, making her flinch. She paused, blinking against the sun glinting off Leo’s shiny silver whistle. He had been waiting for her all along, standing still by the edge of the field.
Leo tossed the ball back with a gentle arc. It landed softly in Mila’s hands instead of rolling away. She looked at the rough leather texture against her palms, then up at Leo’s outstretched hand. The park felt suddenly quiet without the noise of competition. She took a deep breath.
Mila passed the ball to Leo. THUMP. He caught it and returned it with a perfect throw. They ran together, laughing as they chased each other around the swing set. Their long shadows stretched across the green grass, merging into one shape. The game shifted from a race into a shared dance.
They sat on the wooden bench, breathing hard. A butterfly landed on the rusty goalpost nearby. The afternoon light turned golden, warming the wood beneath their legs. They smiled at each other without saying a word. Mila picked up the orange ball again, holding it loosely in her lap.
