Milena slams the 'Start' button. A pixelated soccer ball bursts onto the screen, knocking over her water bottle. Water spills across the keyboard, making the keys stick and squeak like wet sneakers. She stares at the mess, then looks toward the door where sunlight is streaming in.
She grabs her red cleats from under her desk and sprints out of the lab, the heavy door slamming shut behind her with a loud bang. The outdoor air smells like cut grass and warm asphalt as she hits the pavement running. Her shadow stretches long and fast ahead of her.
Milena kicks the real soccer ball against the chain-link fence, but it bounces back hard, hitting her shin with a dull thud. She hops on one foot, wincing, while the ball rolls slowly toward the goal net. A group of friends nearby stops their game to watch her struggle.
She takes a deep breath, lines up her shot, and kicks with all her might, sending the ball soaring through the air. Time seems to slow as the ball arcs high above the playground equipment, catching the sun like a golden coin. The friends stop talking, eyes wide with anticipation.
The ball lands perfectly in the center of the net with a satisfying *thwack*, and her friends cheer, rushing over to high-five her. Sunlight warms her face as they huddle together, laughing and sharing stories about the game. Milena smiles, knowing this joy is better than any screen.
