Miles swung from web to web over the city, hanging upside-down and grinning at the skyscrapers below.
Tonight, though, he pulled the covers all the way over his head and squeezed his eyes shut. The dark room felt huge and empty.
Miles tried turning on the big light, but it buzzed and flickered off.
He pulled the blanket up to his nose, and his toes wiggled nervously against the cold floor.
Miles peeked one eye open and saw a spider-shaped shadow on the wall. It was his new night light.
The shadow did a superhero pose with its arms wide. Miles gasped and pressed his palm flat against the warm plastic.
Miles sat up in bed and watched the spider shadow swing across the ceiling like it was web-slinging through the dark.
His lips curled into a smile. 'I can do that too,' he whispered, throwing off the covers and standing tall on his rug.
Miles stood in the middle of his room with his arms out like Spider-Man, and the spider shadows danced all around him on the walls.
The next morning, Miles swung his legs into his pajama pants, ready for whatever the night will bring.
He reached for the wall switch one more time. Click. The big light flared on, bright and steady.
Miles climbed back into bed, pulled up his covers, and fell asleep smiling. The spider shadow kept watch on the wall.
