Click. The flashlight went dark. Milo pulled his blanket over his head.
Tall shadows leaped up the walls. Pointy. Wiggly. Milo pressed his palms to his ears.
One eye peeked open. A long neck. A wide mouth. Milo's breath came fast.
Milo sat up. His shadow puppet kit sat on the shelf. He reached for it. His hand shook.
He picked up a paper fox. Held it to the wall. A fox shadow appeared — alive and watching.
The shadow fox winked. Milo gasped, then giggled. He moved the paper fox — it danced across the wall.
Milo grabbed a paper bird. Held it up. The bird shadow joined the fox.
The fox and bird raced across the wall. They looped. They danced. Milo laughed out loud.
The shadows weren't scary. They were telling a story.
Milo leaned back against his pillow. The shadow fox sat tall on the wall, watching him. Milo smiled.
Milo turned off the nightlight. Moonlight filled the room. He held up the fox one more time.
The shadow fox waved. Milo closed his eyes. Good night.
