Milo dug a small hole in the soft dirt with his plastic spade.

He dropped a tiny golden seed in, patted it down, and whispered, Grow, grow.

Grandma handed Milo a watering can with pink flowers painted on the side.

Milo watered the spot every morning and every evening, tapping his foot impatiently.

Milo peeked at the dirt each day, pulling at his ears. He checked a calendar on the fence and crossed off another day.

A paper sign flapped on the fence. Wind Warning. The gate banged against the post.

Milo ran to the sprout.

Milo stood over his sprout with his arms spread wide like little wings.

The wind howled and bent the garden grass flat. Milo did not move.

The storm passed. The sky turned blue again.

Milo's knees were muddy and his shirt was crooked. A tall flower with golden petals waved softly above him.

Grandma knelt beside Milo and rested her hand on his head. Milo reached up and touched the golden petals.
