Milo hopped past the garden fence just as the moon slipped behind a cloud. The iron gate swung open on its own with a soft click. His ears perked up at the sound of something humming beneath the soil. He stepped over the threshold, paw pads whispering against warm moss. What could be hiding down there?
A trail of silver blossoms glowed like tiny lanterns, and Milo pressed his nose to each one. Peppery sweetness filled the air. The flowers parted to reveal a stone path winding deeper into the dark. Milo trotted after them without thinking. Behind him, the gate clicked shut, and the moonlight on his fur faded to gray.
Milo turned in a slow circle. The silver blossoms were gone, and every path looked identical under the black canopy. He thumped his back foot once, twice. A breeze carried the sound of distant dripping water. Something rustled in the bushes. Milo froze, whiskers trembling. Which way was home?
A dot of gold light appeared between two roots, then another. A firefly hovered at Milo's eye level, pulsing softly. Milo reached out a paw, and the firefly darted backward before landing gently on his ear. Milo followed it step by step through the dark. The golden glow painted the leaves like scattered coins.
The firefly led the way, darting between roots and over damp stones. Milo followed, counting each golden pulse. The forest grew quieter, the dripping water fading behind them. He kept his eyes on that steady light, one paw ahead of the other, trusting the glow to find the way home.
Milo crested the final hill and stopped. Below him, the familiar wooden fence glowed silver in the moonlight. The garden gate stood wide open, just as he remembered. He bounded down the slope, paws quickening. There it was — the safe, quiet garden he knew. He could go home at last.
Milo hopped the last distance and pressed his cheek against the cool bark of the gatepost. The night air smelled of damp earth and mint. He closed his eyes and breathed it in. The secret garden had let him in, and now it was letting him out. That was the rule, he decided. Fair enough.
The firefly hovered once at the fence line, wings catching the last of the garden's magic. Then it zipped upward, a golden star joining the others above. Milo watched it go, one ear twitching. The gate gave one final soft click behind him, and the moon stepped free of the clouds.
